901 E 6th Street was the first commercial building structure in Texas to employ cross-laminated timber (CLT). Providing class ‘A’ creative office space in the burgeoning Plaza Saltillo Corridor of east Austin, while maximizing attractive tenant amenities and utilizing sustainable building construction methods and materials, 901 E 6th was designed to be a hybrid CLT building.
Leap!Structures performed structural engineering services for the cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete parking garage below grade, as well as the hybrid CLT building above street level. In the office building, structural steel columns and beams with typical spans of 46 feet by 32 feet support 7-inch thick CLT deck panels with 3 inches of concrete topping, providing durable floors and efficient, column-free floor plates for flexible space planning. The mass timber floor decks are left exposed from below, eliminating the need for costly ceiling finishes, while lending warmth and character.
901 E 6th was recognized by the Austin chapter of the Urban Land Institute with it’s 2019 Best Project Innovation Impact Award, and the building also received a 2020 Regional Excellence Award from the Wood Products Council.
